The world of art has always been one of the most exciting, frustrating and dominant forces in my life. It started as a child when I used to draw on any surface available and ended abruptly at the age of sixteen with three failed attempts to pass ‘O’ level art; even though art was always recognised as being my best subject. Plan B was then adopted and I trained to be a Primary School Teacher. The following thirty years were extremely busy with time spent on family, teaching and encouraging the enjoyment of Art in different schools around the country. Apart from the occasional life drawing class, practical art activities were confined to my classrooms.

In 2007 I finally had the opportunity to fulfill my lifelong ambition to receive a ‘proper’ art education. Enrolling in 2007 on the Adult Access Art and Crafts course at Doncaster College, at the ripe old age of fifty-four I was immediately transported out of my comfort zone and introduced to the new skills, concepts and starting points which I felt I so desperately needed. I then gained the desire and confidence to fast track to the degree course at the college.

The next three years became a challenging and exciting roller-coaster ride of lectures, research, experiments and deadlines, resulting finally in my graduation in 2011 with a first class honours degree.

The Access and Degree Courses have given me the understanding and depth of knowledge that I need to begin my career as an Artist.
